What Does RAV4 Mean?

We can’t dive into the history of the Toyota RAV4 without discussing what this flagship SUV’s name stands for. RAV4 is an abbreviation for “Recreational Activity Vehicle with 4-Wheel Drive.” Though today’s Toyota RAV4 models offer all-wheel drive rather than 4-wheel drive, the name still stands as a testament to its versatility.

1st-Generation RAV4: 1996–2000

The evolution of the Toyota RAV4 for the North American market dates back to 1996, when it launched in the United States as a 2-door or 4-door subcompact SUV. Offered with front-wheel drive (FWD) or permanently engaged 4-wheel drive (4WD), it bridged the gap for drivers looking for an urban-friendly vehicle that could also get them off the beaten path.

2nd-Generation RAV4: 2001–2005

For the 2nd generation, Toyota increased the size of the RAV4 and retired the 2-door variant. It offered a 5-passenger interior and a more refined exterior, but kept the side-opening rear door with an exterior-mounted spare tire—a design choice that sets the early RAV4 models apart from modern variants. A highlight of the 2nd-gen RAV4 is a 161-hp engine that debuted for the 2004 model year.

3rd-Generation RAV4: 2006–2012

Major changes for the 3rd-generation RAV4 included an extra 14 inches of length and more than 3 inches of added width. Inside, an optional 3rd row was available for families who needed more passenger space. Drivers craving more engine power also enjoyed the choice to upgrade from the standard 4-cylinder to a 269-hp V6. On-demand all-wheel drive (AWD) replaced the permanently engaged 4WD option, and the RAV4 no longer offered a manual transmission during or after this generation.

4th-Generation RAV4: 2013–2018

A traditional liftgate replaced the nostalgic side-opening rear door on the 4th-generation RAV4. As such, the spare tire moved under the cargo floor. Toyota also retired the 3-row interior option along with the 269-hp V6 engine, leaving drivers with only a 5-passenger interior and a 176-hp 4-cylinder engine for some time. In 2016, the first true Toyota RAV4 Hybrid model entered the market, boasting 196 hp. Outside, the SUV’s styling took on a slightly more aggressive appearance.

5th-Generation RAV4: 2019–2025

Some of the most significant changes to the Toyota RAV4 occurred during its 5th generation. The exterior received a dramatic facelift, debuting a more robust, angular, and rugged-looking design. Built on the Toyota New Global Architecture platform, the 5th-gen RAV4 offered a 203-hp 4-cylinder base engine, along with hybrid options. In 2021, the Toyota RAV4 Prime hit the market as a plug-in hybrid variant boasting a combined 302 hp. During the 5th generation, Toyota started including more standard active safety features to assist drivers in Stafford, such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning with steering assist.

6th-Generation RAV4: 2026–Present

Marking the start of the latest generation, the 2026 Toyota RAV4 continues the rugged exterior design, but with a slightly more futuristic edge. Notably, the 6th-gen RAV4 drops the gas engine altogether, making it a standard hybrid SUV with 236 net combined hp. Drivers can choose FWD or AWD, ensuring they’re ready for everything from city commutes to off-road adventures. The plug-in hybrid variant also remains an option, with the RAV4 Prime renamed the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid for 2026.
